The REAP - Weapons
The one thing that sets a good shooter from a bad shooter in my opinion
is a good weapon system. R-Type has it, Nemesis/Gradius has it and Thunderforce
has it, and thankfully, so does The Reap. The weapons in The Reap are
nice and varied and they are gradually introduced to you the further
you progress. There are five weapons to collect altogether, and they
can be powered up, four of them can be powered up to level 3 strength,
while the initial weapon you start off with is powered up to level 2.
Heres a rundown of the weapon systems:
Ion Cannon
Your run-of-the-mill basic twin cannon, and the weapon you start off
with. This is powered up to Level 2 strength. It fires forward, is moderately
powerful, but is not really worth persevering with.
Blue Plasma
This is given to you in the first stage, and can power up to Level 3.
It starts off as a strong forward firing shot, and upgrades to a more
useful blue plasma spread, firing five directions. It covers a wide area
and is very useful later on.
Electric Spline
This is given to you on stage two (underwater) and is fairly weak to
begin with. It is a homing beam which has the same physics as the homing
laser of Raiden 2 and later sequels, and when the Spline is fully powered
to Level 3 it becomes a double homing beam capable of commiting mass
destruction. Very useful when fully powered up.
Electric Shock
This weapon is much the same as the Blue Plasma in that it starts off
as a single shot and upgrades to a fiveway spread. However this weapon
is a homing weapon, and can also be charged in one of two ways to increase
strength of the shot. First method is to leave it idle for a few moments
the fire. The second way is to hold down the fire bullto a-la R-Type
and let go after the shot is fully charged. Excellent swarming weapon,
suffering from lack of strength and slow firing.
Flamethrower
The weapon given to you in the final stage, this has very short range
to begin with, but when powered to Level 3 is becomes a mid to long-range
weapon with very high powered strength. Is useless against some enemies,
but can kill very quickly when used against others.
